Mom listened to this, but somehow I'm just not in the mood for Amy Tan. This audiobook is now looking for a new home...

First, I can't believe I won. Second, I can't wait to listen to all of my new-to-me audiobooks! Thank you, hyphen8! I enjoyed Amy Tan's "The Joy Luck Club," so it will be nice to sample some of her other work, especially since these tapes are read by the author.
For the most part, I enjoyed this story about Olivia and her half-sister, Kwan; the modern world Olivia and Kwan live in, and the mystical world of Yin that Kwan is deeply connected to. Of all the characters in the book, I believe I liked Kwan the most—she had a simple, pure spirit and an open heart. Olivia, on the other hand, seemed whiny and selfish throughout much of the book, never seeming to appreciate what she had nor being satisfied with who she was. In the end though, I think she learns to embrace her life and start living—always a good idea.
On its way to the winner of the November 2010 edition of the International AUDIOBOOK Sweepstakes RABCK. Enjoy!
This just arrived in the mail - I can't believe I won the audiobook sweepstake again.
I have a few books by Amy Tan on my shelves, but so far I haven't read any of them - this will be a nice introduction to the author.
Not only did I recieve this audiobook. The parcel also included "Talk Talk" by T.C. Boyle and bookcrossing labels and stickers - which is perfect, since I have just run out of both - Thank you so much, grubsneerg, you are very generous!

Just finished listening to this audio book. Although I have a few books by Amy Tan on my shelves, I never got around to reading any of them, so this was a "new" author for me.
I enjoyed the story a lot, and thought the plot was very interesting.
From the cover:
When Olivia is five years old, she meets her half-sister from China, Kwan, a seventeen-year-old girl from her father's concealed first marriage. At night, in the bedroom they share, Kwan tells the American-born "Libby-ah" secrets about the World of Yin: stories of ghosts who were bandit maidens, misionaries and mercenaries from another lifetime. Attempting to eject Kwan's ghosts from her imagination, Olivia commits a betrayal with consequences that last a lifetime.
Thirty-five years later, Olivia still wearily endures advice from Kwan and her ghosts, who now visit the living world as unlicensed marriage counselors and amateur restaurant reviewers. Coincidence and fate carry Kwan, Olivia and her estranged husband, Simon to the mountain village of Kwan's childhood, where another betrayal supposedly occurred over a hundred years before. There, Olivia tries to reconcile the ghosts of her past with shared hopes for the future.
As it moves from San Francisco to China, the story uncovers a series of family secrets that question the connections between chance and fate, beliefs and hopes, memory and imagination. On the journey, we learn the truth about love and our various selves as we rediscover the natural gifts of our hundred secret senses.
