I thought an update might be appreciated.

I have barely begun the book but can already tell it will be sucking me in quickly.

Oct 4 - Liesel has just helped Rosa collect the laundry to be done from Rosa's clients.

Oct 13 - Liesel's Lecture - I am really enjoying this book

Oct 17 - Liesel's book has been soaked.

Oct 20 - Liesel was injured playing soceer. I am not sure why I am enjoying this book so much - perhaps it is the different perspective that it provides.

This book touched me deeply. This story gave me a very different perspective on life in Germany during WWII.

The story is both postive and depressing.

I will not forget Rudy, Max, Hans, Rosa, or the Book Thief for a very long time.

9 out of 10

Thanks all! This book has arrived in beautiful San Diego and will be read very soon so it can continue travelling.

I added my thoughts after mailing the book off:
"I'm not sure there is much I can say about this wonderful book that has not already been said. It was a different tale than I expected from the title, but so compelling, so sad. It was interesting to see the regular poor people of Germany as victims also of their government's programs. I particularly enjoyed the character of Hans Hubermann and his warm and nurturing relationship with Leisl. It took me a while to warm to Death as the narrator, but I came to enjoy it. A beautiful story, highly recommended."

7 out of 10

I stayed up late last night finishing this book and what a good read it was.
I had not realised that this book was really a 'young adults book' & at one level this spoilt it for me a little (but not much).
On another level I was Delighted with a capital D to see that there are actually author's out there writing GOOD books for your adults. Most of the ones I run across in the libraries etc. seem to be totally 'dumbed down'.
Anyway, yes I did enjoy this book - it made me think and brought a differing perspective to a subject that has been covered many, many times.
I thought the idea of having 'Death' narrate the tale worked very well....
Thank you sejent for organising this ring.

8 out of 10

I greatly enjoyed this novel! I liked Death as narrator, and the different twist of him being a sympathetic character. It was nice to read a book showing opposition to the ideas of Nazism among average Germans during WWII. I became very attached to a number of the characters, and was deeply touched by their fate. It is in many ways a tragic story, but at the same time, an inspirational one.

It arrived while I was away on holiday, but here I am! I guess it traveled around 2 months! That's very long, but it's safe now.

I will read it immediately. I already started the first chapter and it sounds fascinating! I don't think it will take too long to read.

9 out of 10

I finished The Book Thief yesterday. This is truly one of the best books I have ever read! It's beautiful, fascinating, compelling and very well written. I am so glad that I could participate in this bookring. Thank you so much!

I sent a message to seayork2002, but I noticed that he/she is no longer living in the UK and that he/she has another copy of The Book Thief on his/her bookshelf. I'll wait for the response and either edit this journal entry or make a release note.

EDIT/ I got a message from seayork2002 that I should ask for the next persons address, so I will send a message to mafarrimond.

EDIT2/ Mafarrimond has already read the book as well, so I sent a message to glitterbee.
