Here's a part of my review...

It's nearly mind-blowing that a tale that has at its core the unbelievable isolation and boredom of an Idaho wilderness winter would be so captivating a read. Fromm's stories and his descriptions of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness capture the rawness and cruel beauty of its winter that oft goes unobserved. With revealing descriptions of the scenery accompanied by powerful tales of wildlife surviving a hostile environment where survival seems impossible, Fromm reveals the dangerous magnificence of this wintry landscape in a way that few, if any, others ever could. Fromm himself is a sympathetic narrator as he seems to get on-the-job training in "mountain manhood." We go along with him as he learns hard lessons about what works and what doesn't, what it looks and feels like to hunt for food for survival, and, of course, that being a mountain man isn't nearly as fantastic as it seems in all the books, not to mention that he probably should have brought a few more than six books along when he agreed to spend 7 months virtually alone.

The rest is on my blog.

Mailed this book a few days ago to BXer Poobah1 to complete a trade. Enjoy! =)

I came home from a relaxing "girls" weekend at a cabin to find this package waiting for me. Lovely ending to a lovely weekend. Many thanks to yourotherleft for the trade and timeliness. I'm glad she found it a good read since my request forced it off her TBR list! I look forward to getting into it.

Cheers,

It took me a while but I finally got to this one. I'm glad I did! Well told story of a college student's poorly thought out decision to spend 7 months alone in the wilderness on an environmental science project. An enlightening experience as it turns out! He endures deep darkness as well as spectacular brightness on his journey. I'm glad I read it and will recommend it to both my sons as well as my husband. In fact, my husband and I are both reading this book as a "coed" assignment for my December book club pick. I look forward to his thoughts on this read. Many thanks to yourotherleft for the trade.

Edited November 20th, 2009: This book is packed in my husband's bag as we're jaunting happily along on a beer brewery touring weekend in Denver, Golden, Boulder and Fort Collins, CO. It remains to be seen whether any reading of this assignment gets done ;-) The beer, friends and fun is good though! I'll keep you posted.

Edited December 16th: Well, our get-together is this weekend and my husband finished this read last night. He thought it was "good." I'll do a wishlist search and hopefully find another BookCrosser to send it onto.

Edit 2/1/2011: This one is with Mark B. as he expressed an interest at our 2010 Christmas party.
