It is July 1962. Edward and Florence, young innocents married that morning, arrive at a hotel on the Dorset coast. At dinner in their rooms they struggle to suppress their private fears of the wedding night to come...
Taking this to read on holiday, just up the coast from Chesil Beach. Might release it while I'm there...

Well, I didn't manage to release this in the actual vicinity of Chesil Beach, so I'm taking it to the Leeds Meetup instead.
Will maybe come back and write a proper review later, but this will have to do for the time being: shnedwards sez v good.

Been a while since I read any McEwan so I'll give this a go.

I've not been very impressed with McEwan's more recent writing - I loved his early stuff (Cement Garden, Comfort of Strangers, The Innocent etc) but have found some of his later work a bit pretentious. But I really enjoyed this one.
This is a close study of two people, their feelings about each other, and their experience of their wedding night. Set in 1962 it is a poignant tale of how this couple carry the burdens of their time, how the sexual mores of their generation impact on their lives. It's a short book - just fitted perfectly into my bus journey from Leeds to Ripon - but not a lightweight one.
