While I was shopping at the Sephora in Times Square my Mother (who would rather watch grass grow than shop for makeup) sat on a bench at the front of the store. She struck up a conversation with the tall Englishman who sat next to her. My mother (who averages about three books a week) was elated to discover that the gentleman was an author who's first book was just about to be published. You guessed it: It was Will Rhode. He was just about to leave New York to return to his native England. We met his wife beautiful wife (who was pregnant.) They were very nice people.

Of course when the book was released, we had to purchase it. Mom read it first, now it's my turn. While the storyline is something neither my Mother or myself would have picked up, we are both glad we did. I'm finding it a real page-turner.

From the back cover:

Joshua King has more reasons than most writers to produce that Great First Novel-and they're sitting in his father's bank account. Before he died of a tragic Viagra overdose, Josh's father put a stipulation in his will: Josh cannot claim his fortune unless he writes a novel within the next five years. It has to include his father as a character. And it has to become a bestseller. Unfortunately the last thing Josh wants is a purpose in life: he's far too busy traveling, taking drugs and growing his hair. At the moment he's very uncomfortably ensconded in a dirty Delhi flophouse. It's all he can afford on a Hindu Week journalist's salary. But it's the perfect place to meet drifters and druggies, users and seekers-the kind of people who know how to find Baba.

Yes, the Baba...the man, the myth, the mystery....and, maybe, the inspiration for a major bestseller.

I wanted so much to like this book. While the plot was far-fetched I did find it to be a page-turner. At the end of the book he really tried to tie everything & everyone into a nice neat package, but it didn't work. It was very hard to follow the high-jinx at the end. The problems actually are contained in the middle of the book, there isn't enough meat in the story and I think if it was developed more in the middle, the ending would make more sense. I think important points of the whole "scam" were left out or assumed. If this was fixed, it would make an excellent movie.
