Journal Entry 1 by Supertalya on Sunday, June 15, 2008
I loved reading about this historical queen and her insane husband, especially since everyone in Korea grew up with this story. I didn't enjoy the second part of the novel and I feel it should have just ended with the historical part. Well, this book is on the 1001 books you must read list. I would like to share it as a bookring. Once I get it back I plan to donate it to the 1001 library.

Normal rules apply. Please try to keep the book no longer than 6 weeks. I am going to limit this to 10 participants.

Order can be changed.

Arrived in today's mail. Thank you for sharing Supertalya.

Journal Entry 4 by cat207 on Sunday, July 6, 2008
An unusual format. I found the first part (Ancient Times) rather repetitive and enjoyed the second half (Modern Times) much more.

Thank you Supertalya for sharing part of your heritage. I have PMed Wandering-B and am waiting for an address.

Journal Entry 7 by wandering-B from Tai Po, Tai Po Hong Kong on Sunday, August 24, 2008
Sorry to take so long to finish this. I enjoyed the first part of the book in which the author relates the tale of the Crown Princess of Korea and her husband. The court intrigues from this time period are probably on par with the tales from today's governments. It was a little difficult pulling this together with the modern times part of the story.

Am mailing it out tomorrow (August 25) to Idrooloverbooks. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 8 by Idrooloverbooks from Merritt, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, October 16, 2008
I apologize for not responding to Wandering B sooner and letting her know that I have received this book and will have it read and on its way within the next week and a half. I have been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. Again, my apologies to everyone on the bookring for holding on to this book for so long......

Oct 27 - I am about half way through Part one.....so far, I am finding the writing style very different, but it is interesting nonetheless....it is taking me longer to read this than I thought it would...I don't find it to be light reading....

Journal Entry 16 by Heaven-Ali from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 31, 2009
I thouroughly enjoyed this book, and I am so glad I signed up for this ring.

The first section of the book is the beautiful haunting story of the Crown Princess married at 10 years old in the 1700's, her tragic life, the deaths of her son, and her "mad" husband.
In the second part of the book we meet Dr Barbara Halliwell, modern academic, mother to a dead son, wife of a "mad" husband, who becomes enchanted by the story of the Korean Princess whilst on a trip to Seoul; and who like the princess loves red, and fears magpies. Barbara's story is just as enthralling as that of the princess, for similar, and different reasons. The similarities between the Princess and Dr Halliwell are obvious. Like the Princess, Barbara is a woman of her time, she has the freedom to travel, while the princess led a cloistered existence.

I loved this book, thank you Supertalya for ringing this book. It may well end up being one of my favourites of this year. I will be sending this on soon : )

Journal Entry 18 by Ythan from Ellon, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, April 4, 2009
This book arrived this morning. That was quick work Heaven-Ali. I'm still a bit snowed under with bookrings/rays at the moment. I aim to have this finished by the middle of May.

Next Update 18th May:

Have just got back from holiday, unfortuantely i didn't get much reading done, i've read 64% of it so far. I'll finish it as quick as i can.

Update 27th May:

I enjoyed both Ancient and Modern Times, the Ancient Times did read a bit quicker for me, I'm glad I haven't let an enclosed life like the Crown Princess. I've never read anything about Korean history before, a new world for me to explore. I could relate to Modern Times and how you can learn something about someone, that makes you want to know more about them because they have something in common with you (we are bookcrossers afterall). I didn't expect the ending in Modern Times at all, a pleasant surprise. Look forward to reading more Margaret Drabble in future.
