How long does it take before somebody becomes a national treasure? It’s certainly happened to Nigel Slater, and Eating for England is a highly enjoyable reminder of just why we esteem the estimable Mr Slater.......As Slater points out, the British have a relationship with food which is quite unlike that of any other nation........few (books) are written as entertainingly as Nigel Slater’s. It isn't just the discussion of food itself (from haute cuisine to the humblest of comfort foods) that’s so diverting here, but other sociological (and tongue-in-cheek) related matters, such as ‘A Teenager at the Table’ (‘The shoulders droop, the head hangs sulkily down, eyes glaring intently at an invisible spot on their lap. Their whole body seems to say ‘I'm not eating this’). And Nigel Slater is perfectly happy to address subjects not found in any other food books (such as the modest chocolate bar -- different varieties are entertainingly compared and contrasted).

usual rules-

-journal on receipt and despatch
-keep no longer than 4 weeks or let me know if there is a problem
-if you are not prepared to ship internationally I may not be able to include you, but I will try to fit everyone in

****UPDATE*** I have decided to add a 'Food for Thought' journal to the ring. Its smallish and lightweight, so wont increase the postage cost by much, you will have to write small! Please add anything you want to the journal-share your secret indulgences, recipes, nostalgia, profound thoughts, foodie art......I'll add some of the entries here when the book completes its journey, so that earlier participants can share in the journal properly.

Received this morning, will start dipping into this straight away as my other read is a bit on the heavy side. Could do with a bit of nostalgic relief!

Quiet a nostalgic trip! Long forgotten delights, many now lost, some still around, bound together with memories of flavour, location and occasion. Written more like an aide mémoire than a narrative, this book can easily be dipped into at any heading that catches your eye. Some personal memories that were stirred for me:- Jacob’s Club Biscuits, yes the chocolate was much thicker, today’s offerings are a bit on the sorry side; hurray for fig rolls & ginger nuts but to my mind digestives are still the number one dunking biscuits, just requires a little more skill; Victoria sponge cakes are still alive and well in Wales, maybe it's just in London that they have gone out of fashion; a man after my own heart, who ever thought of putting sultanas in scones was obviously at a loose end and wonderful black pudding, but it has to be the one with bits in, preferably the one from County Cork. Afternoon tea with the extended family will always be a great memory for me, the sandwiches freshly cut, cold meat and salad, sliced boiled eggs, salad cream, (mayo was a more sophisticated taste back then), scones straight from the oven, chocolate éclairs, fruit flans with thick double cream and my grandmother’s memorable apple tart all accompanied by delightful, thirst quenching milky tea.

Thank you Nigel for the trip down memory lane, and you too starflash for sharing.
Oh and I almost forgot, I’ve just ordered some Parr’s jelly babies online, now eagerly awaiting the post!

I have the next address, will be in the post for Monday.

Oh, yippee! Another Nigel Slater 'memoir' and trip down memory lane ... looking forward to this one!

I wrote an essay about food memories recently, I might have to dig that out and add to the back of the journal...

I still have this book, safe with me. Unfortunately, I've not been able to get to ring/ray books as quickly as I would wish, but I have PM'ed the next person in the list, and I hope to mail it out in the next few days.
