7 out of 10

Picked this one up sometime last year at the Montgomery County Friends Store in Rockville, Maryland.

Definitely not as good the movie, but an interesting modernist take on a bizarre pre-Holocaust society. Am glad to share with others.

Reading this book was a bit of a strange experience. I've seen the movie many times, and consider it one of my favorites. It was very hard to just read and enjoy the book without constantly comparing and contrasting book and movie. Finally telling myself "They are different - get over it!", I was able to appreciate the book more and more. There are some really lovely bits of writing within the stories, like this:

"She was a genius of sadness, immersing herself in it, separating its numerous strands, appreciating its subtle nuances. She was a prism through which sadness could be divided into its infinite spectrum." p. 78

Thank you for sharing the book, UnwrittenLibra. I have the next reader's address and will be mailing it off tomorrow.

That was quite a trip. Usually, I try not to watch the movie of a book before I read the book, so as not to taint my own vision of the characters. But this time, I'm glad I saw the movie first! I think I would have had a difficult time understanding this without the movie's guidance. (By the way, I'm really impressed with the movie now. I liked it before but now I understand more of the background, what the director chose to put in or leave out, and I think he did it very well.) Reading the book was a totally different experience. I loved all of the "history" of the shtetl and Jonathan's family. They made a whole new story for me to discover, that was barely touched on in the movie - they couldn't possibly have put all of that in there. It would've been been longer than LOTR. And weirder.

8 out of 10

I'm so glad I was finally able to read this! What an unusual and beautiful and utterly heartbreaking book. I had also seen the movie first, and I did enjoy the contrast. I struggled at first because I kept picturing Jonathan as Elijah Wood and somehow couldn't reconcile the Jonathan from the book with Wood's film interpretation. Once I gave up on that, the book was brilliant and kept me up past my bedtime more than once.

8 out of 10

I have finally read this book, so sorry it took me so long to get to it! I agree with ealasaidmae. I started to read it, then, not far in, I decided to watch the movie. I don't usually like to do this, but it was much easier to read after having seen the movie. I think the reason, for me, was the dialogue.

I really enjoyed this book. It was both hilarious and sad and not one I will soon forget.

Thank you very much for sharng UnwrittenLibra! I have misplaced rhythmbiscuit's address and will have to send another PM for it, but I will post the book as soon as I have it.
