"As a handbook for Native Studies, Defeathering the Indian provides a rare opportunity to view education through the eyes of a Native person."
(from the introduction)
Emma LaRoque writes about the problem of stereotypes, the ignorance of non-Natives about Native people and the confusion between culture and heritage.

I've read the book last night and found it quite interesting.
I's by Emma LaRoque, who was a native Canadian who wrote in the 1970s to improve the educational system with regard to Indians. Thus there is a lot of information on Indians in Canada in the 60s and 70s of the last century. The book is mostly about the development of stereotypes and how to overcome them by information and "intercultural education".
As intercultural communication was also part of my studies at university I gained a lot from this book, which was written at a time when the idea of intercultural education was being developed.

Journal Entry 8 by RikkiDD from Dresden, Sachsen Germany on Thursday, August 28, 2008
The book arrived savely.

The book is from 1975 and within more than 30 years old. From my own expirience I can say quiet a few things changed. But it is depressing to see and hear that in some people heads there are still the old prejudice. Indians still living in reserves and in the surrounding areas people will look suspicious at them. But thanks to the official changes in the thinking of Canadian politics it changes slowly step by step, although it still needs a lot of time.
And by the way, prejudice is not only a problem between White on Indians, its an overall problem, whenever teo different mentalities, cultures or way of livings meet.
We all should think about this:
(about abilitiy of adoption of Indians in the society the were forced in)
… Besides, however thought of accusing the first European settlers of trying to become Indians when they arrived on Indian land and were fed and taught survival skills by Indians? How about the missionaries who learned the Indian languages? Did anyone call them Indians? Did a Scot become a non-Scot when he no longer wore his kilt or played the bagpipes? Furthermore, a Ukrainian, a Frenchman or an East Indian is allowed to remain a Ukrainian, a Frenchman, and so forth even when he is a Canadian national. Then why is it so difficult to acknowledge that an Indian can remain Indian in any society? Why is he singled out from the possibility of change? Or why is there a stigma attached when he does change? ...
