This was a difficult book to read at first. I knew that this book wasn't going to have a happy ending. I am a little leary of reading books that I know don't have happy endings. I was very impatient with the pettiness and smallness of mind that was portrayed by the respectable characters of Victorian society. However, the way things turned out there was an openness achieved at the end of the book by some characters that actually made the ending of the book enjoyable to read. I guess that is what makes a superb novel. Tension described that gets relieved somehow by the end of the book.
