10 out of 10

last summer I read this inspiring book, and absolutely loved it!! I wild-released it Aug. 11 for the Hiroshima Peace Day challenge, but I thought if I found another copy, I'd love to make a ring it. Well, to make a short story long, I was in a bookstore recently, and there it stood as part of a display. And jogging my memory. So I had to buy it, and now I'll offer it, hoping it will do much travelling, inspring, and bringing of hope.

from the cover:
In 1993, a mountaineer named Greg Mortenson drifted into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakoran mountains, after a failed attempt to climb K2. Moved by the inhabitants' kindness, he promised to return and build a school. Three Cups of Tea is the story of that promise and it's extraordinary outcome. Over the next decade, Mortenson built not one but fifty-five schools--especially for girls--in the forbidding terrain that gave birth to the Taliban. His story is at once a riveting adventure and a statement to the power of the humanitarian spirit.

Ok, I'm trying not to backtrack too much and accomodate preferences. I started out very anal about my first couple of rings, but no longer.... pretty much, I just ask that you be considerate of those in the ring with you, reading and sending on in a reasonable time. Probably the biggest thing there is if when it's your turn you're either buried under rings (we all know how they can show up at once) or life. If the timing is bad, just ask to be skipped, pm me, and I'll put you back in later.

Just received this today in Oregon from Erishkigal on the book's first leg of its ring.

This is a book I've been wanting to read for a long time. I work in a bookstore (just started back recently) and it's only knowing that this book was coming in a ring that kept me from buying one in the store. ah, bookcrossing!

In the package with the book there are many beautiful postcards and bookmarks about Utah and Salt Lake City. It's lovely to have them included, what a wonderful idea!

Thank you, Erishkigal, for including me. I plan on starting this immediately and will pass it on when I'm done.

I knew very little about the region, very little about the book itself. The book drew me fully into Mortenson's world, learning about the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan he works so hard to help - people as diverse and engaging as the people of the U.S. I very much appreciated how the book juxtaposed America's war on terror with Dr. Greg's quest for education.

The enemy IS ignorance.

Obtaining the next person's address to send it on...

Yikes! I have had this forever. I am so sorry and will have it out when tori58 send me their address.

I enjoyed this book and loved the message that Mortenson is sending out there on educating Pakastani girls. What an inspiration!

Inspiring indeed!

I found the book to be a little slow at first; too much detail about Mortenson himself before I was at all invested in why I should care. The second half of the book was absorbing, though, and so informative about a region that it would behoove all of us to know more about.

One of Mortenson's climber friends states a couple times that he should win the Nobel Peace Prize, and I heartily agree. What Greg Mortenson is doing in Pakistan and Afghanistan is so sorely needed. It was wonderful to read how giving the children of these remote mountain areas a comprehensive, secular education is so improving their quality of life. I especially liked hearing how some of the women have been able to get a basic health education and medical supplies so small problems like minor infections and the like do not turn fatal.

I am glad this book is still going to be spreading its message of hope. Thanks for sharing it, Erishkigal! It is on its way to 300dogs.

You all know the saying "when it rains, it pours" right? Is it just me or as far as bookrings are concerned, the saying should be more like "when it rains, it floods!!" I had two other rings arrived on the same day as this one! Even though I've had this book for about six weeks now, once I finally got to sit and read it, I had it finished in just a few days.

Wow. "Inspiring" doesn't seem a strong enough word to describe Greg Mortenson and all that he has accomplished. I found myself continually flipping to look at the photos of the men, women and children described throughout the book. I do hope to read one day that Greg Mortenson has indeed won the Noble Peace Prize.

Thank you Erishkigal for starting this ring. I already have the address for the next reader and will mail this out today.

I enjoyed learning about the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan and these regions of the world. One point that stood out to me is that a basic education should not be taken for granted, as this opportunity is not offered to every person worldwide. Greg Mortenson definitely deserves to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to provide these educational opportunities to those who don't have them.

Today I am mailing this book to hopi100.
