Sanchez's debut novel chronicles the senior year of three gay teens struggling with issues ranging from coming out to first love to an HIV scare. The story lines communicate a hint of an educational agenda (Sanchez sprinkles in the names of support groups like Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays into the novel, and lists contact information for organizations at the end), but the characters' complicated feelings are well drawn, and readers will find themselves interested in each of the protagonists' lives. Sanchez creates modern situations that speak to contemporary teens: Nelson and Kyle stand up to their principal for the right to form a gay-straight alliance at their school, and Nelson has unprotected sex with a stranger he meets online. The relationship between Kyle and closeted jock Jason also develops realistically, and the awkward triangle among the three males builds subtly and convincingly. Readers will learn and understand both boys' perspectives, from Jason's fear that he will be found out to Kyle's growing agitation at his mixed messages. Some of the writing is stilted ("You would've thought the prodigal son had come home," Sanchez writes when Kyle finally connects with his father), and some of the language and sexual situations may be too mature for some readers, but overall there's enough conflict, humor and tenderness to make this story believable--and touching.
Good book to start the series. I enjoyed the story and am curious as to what happens next with the three boys.

Oooh, looks great. I can't wait to read it.
Update 28 November: I am glad to see books of this genre available for teen readers. I teach in an elementary and still hear people refer to everything negative as "That's gay." I am glad we live in a time where there are positive homosexual role models. The author describes the characters in a positive manner and I like how one of the main characters is the "out, loud, and proud" type, and shows how other closeted homosexuals may not want to be put in the same "category." I hope to read the next book in the series and hope to get this book ordered for our middle/high school library--especially now that there are no public record to show what students have what books checked out.

Going into KateKintail's GLBT bookbox!
I'm claiming this wonderfully well-traveled book from the bookbox; many thanks! (The picture on the cover makes at least one of the characters look rather sinister, but maybe that's just my imagination!)
This is an entertaining book about a trio of gay teens and how they cope with high school, coming out, parents, romance, sex. I'd thought it was going to be a bit fluffy, but it surprised me, and while it's on the light side it does deal with a number of issues in a reasonable way. Jason the closeted, Kyle the confused, and Nelson the flamboyant each have different ways of dealing with their lives; they're appealing characters and I wound up hoping things work out for them. [I also liked the sequel, Rainbow High, but haven't read the third one yet.]

I took this and a couple of other books to my niece in Sleepy Hollow, thinking she might want them for her school's Gay Straight Alliance group. Enjoy!
