8 out of 10

From the Back cover
"This extraordinary odyssey explores a terrifying, intoxicating world where reality and imagination are indistinguishable. At once a technopuzzle, confession and mystery, the cybergypsies is a hugely entertaining, voyeuristic glimpse into a world of infinite possibility that even the fiercest technophobe will find impossible to resist."
I found this book fascinating and a real departure from what I usually read. Pciked up by Daveytay at a Rotary book sale but as his TBR was so big I got to this one first.

A weird book, but I kind of enjoyed it. It's sort of half fiction, half autobiography, half history of the early days of bulletin boards and on-line games, and half humanitarian report (yes, that's a lot of halves, but it's that kind of book). Makes for an interesting (if at times confusing) mix.

I came to the internet just as the era "Bear" describes was ending, but even then there was still some of that sense of wonder at creating and exploring a whole new universe. The internet has become so commonplace nowadays it's hard to remember that was only a decade or two ago.
