It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . . Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Best read of 2008!!!! I laughed and I cried a lot. I loved Liesel so much. Plus Rudy, Papa, Mama, and Max. A big story from such a young girl. There was so much tragedy for such a young person to have in her life but the times were ripe for such tragedies and I'm sure there were people that had it so much worse than Liesel. She at least had a loving family and wasn't having to hide from Nazis. Still being poor in war torn Germany during WWII when you didn't even believe in Hitler wasn't ...more Best read of 2008!!!! She at least had a loving family and wasn't having to hide from Nazis. Still being poor in war torn Germany during WWII when you didn't even believe in Hitler wasn't easy. She came to live with the Hubbermans not knowing how to read or write but within the short 4 years she read excellently and wrote even better. Stealing the books was incidental to this story. She stole them because she was hungry for knowledge at first then later out of spite. I would love to see this in a movie but then it would be spoiled because my imagination is better.

I took this book with me on my trip to USA and loved it!! What a fantastic book and yes I cried and laughed a lot! I passed it to my travelling companion who also read it whilst we were away and loved it so much has kept it to pass on to her daughter in Scotland. This would definitely be one of the best books I read this year! Thank You Cheesy!
