This was left, unregistered, on the OBCZ shelf at Three Fine Cups.

From the cover -
Middlesex tells the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides, and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family, who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of 1967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret, and the astonishing genetic history that turns Callie into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling, Middlesex is an exhilarating reinvention of the American epic.

Brought this home today. Seeing Melydia tomorrow at the Pour House, and since she has this on her wishlist I know this book will find a new reader.

Journal Entry 4 by wingMelydiawing from Rockville, Maryland USA on Sunday, June 8, 2008
Picked this up at today's meetup at the Pour House in Westminster, Maryland. I'd completely forgotten that this was on my wishlist. Thanks, Mary! :D

Edit 13 July 2008: I read this book, then stuck it in the bookbox before journaling it.

Calliope Stephanides was born a girl, then at the age of 14 discovered she is actually genetically male. Though narrated by Cal, this story actually begins in 1922 with Cal's grandparents fleeing Turkey for America. The imagery in this book was haunting, the characters unforgettable, and the scope incredibly vast. As long as you're not squeamish about ideas that go against the sexual norm, this is one seriously engrossing book.

(A note on the audio version of this book: the reader is phenomenal. Quite possibly the best I've ever heard. If you find the text version hard to get through, I highly recommend picking up the audiobook. It's simply superb.)

This book is passing through my hands while in melydia's BookCrossing Meetup BookBox.

Journal Entry 6 by crrcookie from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Well, the Meetup BookBox is full and I couldn't get the flaps to close so that means taking out a book. This one seems to be the one that I would most likely read. And even if I don't get into it I know that it is a very much wished for book and surely I can find someone to send it to or I could make it into a Ray It Forward or something similar.

We'll see how it goes and if I can get to it relatively soon!

Journal Entry 7 by crrcookie from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Monday, December 1, 2008
I tried. I really tried. And it isn't that it is uninteresting but it is a bit drawn out. I wanted some more about the actual person in the story and not the entire family history. I just couldn't make myself go on.

This style of writing is just not for me and I wish the next person who gets this book the best.

This book took a trip with me to the BookCrossing UnConvention in Kansas City, October 23-25, 2009.

I saw this one on the book buffet at the awesome BC in KC UnCon and had to make a comment. I read it several years ago and really enjoyed the coming-of-age aspect of Cal's story. Definitely unforgettable for me and a good read for those trying to understand those whose sexuality is not easily defined in black and white. Due to a lack of suitcase space I left it behind in KC but look forward to seeing its journey.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

During the weekend of October 23rd-25th, 2009 BookCrossers from many locations came together to share the love of books and BookCrossing at an UnConvention. We stayed at the Doubletree Hotel in Overland Park and took group release trips to Kansas City locations in both Kansas and Missouri. I took this book to the weekend event and I have no idea where it ended up. I hope that one day I will get a journal entry alert that will let me know the fate of this book.

Found this book on the sale shelf of the Joplin Public Library. I was going to buy it (even BEFORE I found out about bookcrossing.com!! This is SUCH a cool thing! I leave books in public places when I'm done with them anyway, so I'll totally start doing it through this site!!) because I've always meant to read it, though I think it'll take me a bit longer to read than a normal checkout period at the 'brary. I will definitely pass it on, even if it takes me three months to read it.

Journal Entry 13 by mixtressrae at Joplin, Missouri USA on Monday, February 13, 2012
I feel awful I haven't journaled this yet (oops, I have, I am the anonymous reader at the bottom of the list--I feel bad I have stalled this book for so long!), as I found it in my workplace in March of 2011 on the sale shelf of the Joplin Public Library. I have always wanted to read this book and didn't know about Book Crossing, but was intrigued when I read the label! I knew the book probably wasn't supposed to be sold, but I bought it for 50 cents. I still, gulp, have not read it.

Interesting tidbit of the story: I am a grateful survivor of the awful tornado that hit my hometown May 22nd of last year. My home got destroyed, but I saved this book! With all the chaos of putting my life back together I had thought I'd already journaled this book and hadn't checked the site until the newsletter in my email box today reminded me of this wonderful community. I plan to read it in March and release it again. Hopefully I will find a few in my collection I can release along with it.
