Just finished this one today. A cracking good read. I would be interested to see the animals created in labs, particularly the Pigoons and Spidergoats. A very good dystopian story about pharmaceutical corporations out of control. While I think there is a bit too much Pharmanoia out there, there is definitely a danger in not keeping these companies in check. posting to earthcaroleann as soon as I get an address.

This is the second book I have read by this author and it will be the last. They seem never ending but I keep going to see how they finish and then I wonder why I bothered.

my turn, thank you

Ok having read the last review with trepidation I can only assume that this is a marmite book.
I loved it. I loved the simple almost tongue in cheek names given to new creations and the way they were designed. I loved the explanations for the reasoning behind each adaptation to a creature.
It's also quite scary when you think of experiments being argued for at the moment as far as human embryos are concerned. My feeling is that this is a book before it's time that will become more and more relevant as time progresses.
Overlap in here on the vaccine/drug issue between this and either Michael Palmer or Tess Gerritsen, I don't remember which and also on the clicking on the eye in the picture to get through an internet gateway, that's been used by a popular crime writer.
Ultimately this was a book that I had fun reading in a very strange way.
Thanks for sharing

My, what a bleak future Atwood paints! I don't know which was worse, the before or the after the central events!
I really enjoyed reading it, though there were a number of things that could have done with a bit of improvement. For example I felt that the character Oryx needed to be fleshed out a bit more. I know she is supposed to be mysterious, but she didn't actually do very much, and I was frustrated by her evasive replies, she never gave straight or even truthful answers to anything she was asked or say anything particularly interesting, and it isn't clear why the male characters were in love with her. Also, I would have liked to see a bit more insight into Crake's character and motivations, and the process and reasons that turned him from a reasonably normal, well adjusted teenager into this almost deified mastermind.
I also found the jumping timeline slightly distracting, just as soon as I really started to get into the present time, the next chapter would go into the past, and as I began getting really interested in a the narration of some past event, it would break the tension by jumping to another timeframe again.
All the same, I thought it was a great, interesting read, which I actually thought could have been a bit longer.
Will send to the next person on the list.

Got it today! It's #2 on my TBR list, but with the weather getting so nice out now, I'll probably be spending a lot of time reading outside, so it shouldn't be too long!

Wow. As a biologist, this book embodied everything that I hope doesn't happen and scares the crap out of me. Not that any of this will happen in the near future, but I'm sure that at some point we'll be technologically capable of it. I only hope that the future scientists think before they do.

I am up to page 65 of this book and here I found a BookMooch card and a little note, presumably from Amcamp saying "Hope you enjoy" Well I am not sure if "enjoy" is the correct term. What a strange mind Atwood has. What an awful world it would be if it comes to the one depicted here. Having just read a book about assisted pregnancies, in vitro fertilization,I realize that just about anything is possible.

It took me a long time to finish the book. In the words of Earthcaroleanne an earlier reader and I quote " This is the second book I have read by this author and it will be the last. They seem never ending but I keep going to see how they finish and then I wonder why I bothered."
Actually i liked another book by Atwood that I read but can't say I enjoyed this one.

This was a different type of book than I am used to reading, but once I start a book I have to see it through.
