I read this book when it became a best-seller, and had mixed feelings about it.
An engrossing story, but somehow there was an element of unreality about it. The author seems to have a mild-to-medium case of orientalism.
I haven't seen the film adaptation yet.

I read it during my stay in Switzerland. It was not bad. Describing exactly what the title says. I haven't watched the movie so I can't compare it. But nevertheless it was worthy some time to read it. Just nothing extraordinary.
Journal Entry 5 by Alerion at Begijnhof in Haarlem, Noord-Holland Netherlands on Sunday, May 12, 2013
Released 10 yrs ago (5/12/2013 UTC) at Begijnhof in Haarlem, Noord-Holland Netherlands
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
The book was released for the Greek bookcrossing game "Skyropoly" (a bookcrossing monopoly game) 4th round for the team "Ατρόμητα Τροχάδια". This week our task is to release books in red light districts.
The book describing the life of a Geisha was released at the windows of the inside area called "t' Poortje", which are looking towards the Waalse Kerk. Haarlem has a small red light district with around 38 windows / kamers. Most of these windows are within private areas so are hidden from public view. Only a few windows are directly visible from the street. The largest private area is 't Poortje right beside Waalse Kerk. The Waalse Kerk was built in the middle of the 15th century. The area - streets immediately around the Waalse Kerk are known as Begijnhof. Begijnhof derives it's name from the Beguines and Beghards, Roman Catholic religious communities that lived in the area.
