I ended up reading Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? by Melissa Senate because of my upcoming nuptials, and loved it so much I had to read See Jane Date immediately. Because I read the books out of order, I already knew how See Jane Date would end, but it didn't detract from my reading pleasure. See Jane Date was a good chick lit book, even though I have to say Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? is even better. See Jane Date is not only about dating, it's also a story of how high school insecurities can still haunt you as an adult, and about friendship and self esteem. Jane's story is yet another "ugly duckling" story, she was shy and unpopular as a teen, and her self esteem as an adult is still so low, that she feels threatened by Natasha Nutley, her former classmate, when she gets to be the editor of Natasha's tell-all memoir. Jane lies to Natasha about having a boyfriend, and suddenly, she ends up having to bring this imaginary boyfriend with her to her cousin's wedding. Now she just needs to find him. Jane's dating was actually the weakest part of the book, I much preferred to read about her interaction with the other female characters. I could relate to Jane, although sometimes I didn't like the mean thoughts that her insecurity caused. I was surprised that Jane and Eloise were so tight, as Jane wasn't present that much in Eloise's book, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?. Jane's relationship with Natasha was for me the carrying force of the novel. I thought it was funny that the author, through Jane's mouth, emphasized how important the first chapter is for Natasha's memoir, because I didn't think See Jane Date got off to a strong start. But persevering through the confusing beginning, I got to a book that's definitely better than promised by the first chapter. Even though the American dating culture, and the characters' slight obsession with getting men to propose seemed very alien to me, I could still relate to them and enjoy the story. Jane's inner transformation from ugly duckling to a beautiful swan was an engaging read. |
