In the 22nd century Earth obtains a limitless supply of free energy by tapping into a parallel universe. But there's a hidden cost: the energy transference is destabilizing both universes, and if a solution is not found, they will eventually be destroyed. The book consists of three parts: the first part covers the discovery of free energy and its effects, the second covers the inhabitants of the parallel universe, and the third covers the attempt to fix things.

The first and third part of the book are pretty standard Asimov, nothing mind-blowing and most of what happens is easy to see beforehand, especially in the third part. What makes this book a cut above average is the second part. The aliens are very well developed and interesting. The problems in the parallel universe are depicted to parallel (heh) the problems in Earth's universe. If Asimov had written the whole book from the aliens' perspective, it might have been even better.
