From Amazon.ca:

A harrowing pathology of the soul, Mad Shadows centres on a family group: Patrice, the beautiful and narcissistic son; his ugly and malicious sister, Isabelle-Marie; and Louise, their vain and uncomprehending mother. These characters inhabit an amoral universe where beauty reflects no truth and love is an empty delusion. Each character is ultimately annihilated by their own obsessions.

Deceptively spare language. All the relationships depicted are painful, especially the maternal ones. Hard to realize the author was only 20 when this, her first novel, was published in 1959.

It's difficult to believe that Blais was only 20 when she wrote this story which develops more themes than you can shake a stick at. Ideas of beauty, morality, family and relationships are all on display and de-constructed in a what, on the surface, appears to be a fairy tale gone awry. It wasn't until I read the afterword that the cultural importance of the novel became apparent and immediately I started to read it a second time.

It's not often that a story manages to be captivating when the reader dislikes all of the characters as much as I did but the story is dense with ideas and still manages to be easily accessible. A win on all counts.
