"Mapp and Lucia is the prize jewel in E. F. Benson's series of Lucia novels, bringing together for the first time the eponymous middle-aged doyennes of polite 30s society: Miss Elizabeth Mapp and Emmeline Lucas (Lucia to her friends). Lucia, recently widowed, is the newcomer to the village of Tilling and eager to wrest the reins of social supremacy from Miss Mapp. In their polite acts of sabotage and ruthless jockeying for the position of cultural arbiter Mapp and Lucia tear up the convetions of drawing-room diplomacy and enter a protracted conflict using fetes, garden parties, musical soirees and bridge evenings as their deadly weapons..."

This is hilarious and comes highly recommended. It's just so British :D

How amusing! This was a charming book with great British humour. I loved the characters, they were very much caricatured and the way of their life was hilarious! Their days were filled with gossip and small insignificant matters until the "war" between Lucia and Mapp began. There was such fun details; the art exhibitions where everyone in a small community bought each other's paitings, the dinners and tea-parties and the continuous competition.

While reading, I kept imagining scenes from Jeeves & Wooster and Ladies of Letters in my head! At times I thought the latter had been ripping off ideas from this one, but who knows. Didn't work for me as well as it could have, but still a nice read.
