Ruby lands herself a job in the big city. There she undertakes the venerable tradition of Poker Night - a way to eat, drink, smoke, analyse, interrupt one another, share stories, and raise the stakes...

A few people have asked for this book to be a RING.... Thus, the book shall travel....

The book is here, I just finished a book, so I will start on this one now! This book has been on my wish list for awhile so I am excited to finally have a chance to read it! Thank you turnpages!

Update: sejent would like to be skipped, (she received this book as a gift), so I contacted 300dogs to get an address.

I finished this book last night! It was hard to put down once I had started it. I was thinking it would be more like Bridget Jones, but it was a bit more serious than that. The main character is Ruby and her life is a bit of a mess. This book reminded me of Running with Scissors. It was slow to start but it was worth it! I will have to look for her other book Ask Again Later.

I have the address for 300dogs and will plan on mailing it on June 2nd! :-)

Sorry, guys, but Ruby was just a bit too neurotic for me. I've never been able to understand women who seem not to be able to define themselves except as they relate to men (more specifically, to 'a man'). Ruby and each of her friends are defining themselves in this way--even Lily, who finally accepts that she doesn't really relate to men at all. It was only about halfway through that I realized that I needed to read the short chapters as if they were Ruby's newspaper columns, since that's how they seem. I guess this just isn't my kind of book--I should stick to my mysteries and historical fiction. Relationship fiction (what else can you call it) doesn't work for me.

I'll be sending the book on to flossie771 in the next couple of days.

Arrived in today's Mail.
Thankyou Turnpages for the bookring and
Thankyou Flossie771 for contacting me and sending this my way.
Perfect timing, I've just finished 2 other books and was wondering what to start next.
I'll post again as soon as I'm finished.

Well I'm finished. An easy book to read, I liked that in a "modern" story they met though letters to each other. Otherwise It was OK. Fun but not riveting. Have PMed next in line, will post off this week.

25 July Have sent a 2nd PM to schneeweischen to ask for address, hope all is OK. I'll post the book as soon as I hear from you.

The book has arrived (I believe three days ago). Quite fast for such a long journey!
I have some train rides coming up, and plan to read it then :o)

08/09/08:
This weekend I've started to read, and find it quite entertaining. I probably don't get it all... (the very dryish humor) but that's ok, most important is that I enjoy the read :o)

11/09/08:
Finished the book yesterday,
didn't like the parts from her past/childhood and the shrink sessions...
liked the ones when she meets her friends or the Cadaver or Michael, the pointed exchanges,
also, very interesting, the way there is so much left out between the short chapters, for me to fill :o)

Journal Entry 17 by Urfin from Wolfsburg, Niedersachsen Germany on Saturday, January 10, 2009
Ok, I had sent the book on in November (forgot to make a release entry)
together with this one: Time Traveller's Wife
as naturalone was behind me in both rings...
Unfortunately, there is no JE since, and she did not reply to my two PMs (beginning and end of December). She doesn't seem very active at BC lately but I still have some hope, maybe she just can't access her mailbox or sth.
so I wrote her by snail-mail today.
Let's hope that she got the books.

What a surprise! I received this book already today, and am looking forward to reading it.

Journal Entry 22 by wolkenklang on Sunday, June 14, 2009
This was not quite what I expected... It isn't fluffy light chicklit at all (although that's the sound of a title like Girls' Poker Night). It's a story with quite a lot of depth, that sometimes depressed me a little. Ruby is a heroine with many problems, a lot of which derive from her past and especially childhood, who goes to see a therapist to work on these problems, but this doesn't seem to work throughout the book. These are the parts that I didn't enjoy much, mainly because I was expecting (and craving) a light read. Still, the book is FULL of humour! A little cynic maybe, but really, really funny. I was laughing out loud many times, and especially enjoyed her telling about her encounters at work (especially with the Cadaver and the guy with the oh so funny mugs), the episodes with Michael, and of course: Girls' Poker Night (I especially liked the Skorka character).
Overally a very quick read that I enjoyed in (many) parts.

I agree with a lot that's been said about this. It's not fluffy chick-lit and Ruby is very neurotic indeed. Yet, it was a nice change....
