It took a little while for me to get into this book but I came to love it. A mystery overlaid with a love story and inspersed with fictionalised biography, and all with a wonderful evocation of London, and the Thames in particular, at the beginning of the 20th century. In some ways it seems a world away and in others it could have been happening to the folks next door right now.
Jakeman writes with the exurbance of a craftsman at the peak of their skills, her writing style matching with artistic sensitivity the messerizing colours of the Monet paintings discribed. I never thought I would enjoy word pictures quite so much, but this book is pack full of little gems. Great stuff and highly recommended.
