Two sessions today at the Heretaunga Giant Charity Bookfest. First visit I was selecting on one of more of the following:-
a) author I knew and liked;
b) NZ author to store for the BC Anniversary Convention in 2009 being held in Christchurch, NZ in April;
c) interesting synopsis especially if it was a crime story
d) perhaps most important - clean.
I intended to be very choosy and not get many books but came home with 28 the first session and 15 the second.
Why did I choose this one?

c) a crime story with the main protagonist a female lawyer. Yum.

Partial synopsis from back cover:

Two fires in one summer have raged through the valley, igniting suspicions of arson. When a third blaze ends in a fatality, the police name a suspect: Wish Whitefeather, Paul's trusted assistant and the son of Nina's ex-assistant, Sandy Whitefeather. Both Nina and Paul are certain Wish is innocent-and as they work together to clear him, more frightening questions are raised. For as the evidence is sifted, another fire is set. And out of the flames a terrifying picture emerges: of a community steeped in secrets and rage, a tangled history between two men, and a killer whose motives are more complex-and chilling-than anyone can imagine.

Good compelling story with page-turning motivation. Strong characters.
The geographic descriptions of the general area around Lake Tahoe were interesting, as was the feeling of future development encroaching on a peaceful rural community.
