Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book anda cache of yellowing letters adressed ominously to 'My dear and unfortunate successor'. Her discovery pluges into a world she never dreamed of - a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and het mother's mysterious fate connect to an evil hidden in the depths of history.

Very good book, much better than I expected.

The quotation on the back by the Observer told met that it was 'a spirited update of Bram Stoker's classic, with a vastly ingenious plot in which Dracula has developed a mysterious penchant for librarians... Kostova is a whiz at storytelling and narrative pace.' I haven't read Bram Stoker, but I associated Dracula with vampires. I don't like horror, so this was the reason I didn't wanted to read when it was first published. It came however on my path, I started to read it out of curiosity. I stayed on reading and was captured by the three generation novels a travel through historical en nowadays Europe. Entertaining and interesting. The - changing - narrative by different people of different generation and sex (especially father and daughter) enriches the book where mostly something like this is spoiling.

It wasn't a horror book. After some googling I discovered Kostova went back to the historical Dracula. If don't expect this, you can't understand the plot. Thanks to this discovery I had an entertaining discussion by mail with a bookcrosser in the USA who didn't understand the plot. Later on she mailed me she had bought another copy for het private collection (she first one she had registered for Bookcrossing and released)!

Irenne's husband: good read (I kept on reading), but no content of much substance. Something like the Da Vinci Code.
