Introducing the Bookcrossing community to Antonia Hildebrand. If you get to "On Being Awarded" and are curious as to her William Blake short story (pp 95 -99) then you may wish to turn to my bookpage.

Just received and already have read the first 3 essays. Thank you, playtheman. I will send this on it's way when finished.

8 out of 10

I've been thinking and thinking and I still don't know why I received this, but thank you, playtheman. A good writer. And thank you for posting the short story, which I enjoyed immensely.

I have a couple of quibbles: The War on Poverty was a Johnson program, nothing to to with the Kennedy's who did not get shot for it. Makes me suspect other facts. And she doesn't think much of one of my favourite films of all time, "Chicago," but that's all right; I didn't much like "Moulin Rouge." :-)
But I loved this, from the essay on War (2002/2003): "I've heard estimates that a war with Iraq will cost America 100 billion American dollars. Some commentators have estimated that just the cost of war with Iraq (leaving out the effect on oil prices) has the potential to cause the American economy to collapse, with devastating consequences for the whole world."
Well, gee.

I think I'll send this on to eeny, meeny, miny, anglersrest.

Thanks for your comments, Iojima, it is already a worthwhile exercise for me. Whilst I don't agree with Antonia Hildebrand on everything she is an interesting person. She serves afternoon tea and lunch at the Bull's Head Inn and acts as guide. The rooms are decorated with furniture from a bygone era and you can almost sense the presence of guests who arrived in a horse and buggy.

What a nice surprise - thanks for sending. I am curious about the book, but will have to be so as I have four rings here at the moment.
