"Now funny, now poignant, but always honest and thought-provoking. Peculiar Chris is a simple story of complex feelings. About coming-of-age. About love. About life and death."

From Wikipedia:

"Peculiar Chris is the first Singapore novel to deal with gay themes.[dubious – discuss] Authored by Johann S. Lee, it was published in Singapore by Cannon International in 1992.

Lee penned the book while doing his National Service in Singapore at the age of 19. It was published a year later. The book recounts the life and loves of Chris and his partner Samuel. It is also noteworthy for documenting how the military bureaucracy reacts when a soldier comes out in Singapore."

This may not be great literature, but I found the story touching and sincere (if a bit melodramatic). I also appreciate its landmark position as the first gay novel published in Singapore.

Next off to sakirmo.

Even though the book is rather well-written, you can easily see it's written by a very young person. It's a cute story, but especially towards the end the excessive melodrama was starting to wear me out... I wonder how much things have really changed in Singapore since 1992, regarding gay issues? Anyway, it's rare to come across a book from/about Singapore so that made it all the more interesting to read.
