Been looking high and low for this one and then I found it in an awesome 2nd hand bookstore down the road. I spent hours in there with my bf!

A very dense but not dry, read.
This 400+ pages is about the evolution of American English and how certain new words came to be about. To put it all in context, Bryson describes American history - political, sporting, cultural, technological, etc. Fascinating stuff. Learnt a lot.
A bit of the Bryson brand of humour creeps in here but don't expect belly laughs, as can be had reading some of his travel narratives.

Picked up at the Perth BC Meetup last weekend. I've read a couple of Bryson's other books and look forward to this one too :-)
I've read a couple of Bryson's books and found them very entertaining and chatty, but this is another level altogether. I am so impressed with how much information Bryson has crammed into this book - and how much research he must have done for it. It was a great way to learn more about America's history - particularly many parts I had very little idea about. This is a dense book and quite long, but still very easy to read. Highly recommend!
This was requested recently on the VBBOz, so I'm packing it up now and it should be in the post tomorrow!
