I read this as a Ray, so here are my previous comments.
I really enjoyed this read, the story is about Ruby and takes us through her own story, as well as that and her (mainly female) relatives. It is funny, close to the bone and very sad. There is great local colour in the book - York, rural Yorkshire, a farm in Canada and Scotland. Everything is interconnected, with wee (and not see wee!) footnotes telling you the background to remarks, possessions, etc.
Nothing lasts forever, memories are subjective and history seems doomed to repeat itself.

Journal Entry 3 by Tigerly at Addo Elephant National Park, -- Parks (National and State) -- South Africa on Friday, August 2, 2013
I found this book on an bookshelf in The Aardvark Guesthouse in Addo, Eastern Cape, South Africa last year October. Eventhough I was reading an other book at the time, I picked it up immidiatly, because it intrigued me.
It's a beautyfull read. It creates a whole world around you, it skippes from past to present to even future, yet you never get lost, because the writer just captures you with this story.
I did'nt take the book to The Netherlands with me, but left it to be read by my sisters mother-in-law. Yet, she brought it back to The Netherlands for me. It's in Utrecht now. But I'll send it traveling today!

Wow, such a nice surprise to find this in my mailbox today! I've read 'When will there be good news' by this author and enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to reading this too. I will see to it that the book continues its journey.
Thanks everyone who made this possible!

I finished reading a couple of days ago and was sorry to turn the last page.
I always enjoy coming-of-age stories, especially if dysfunctional families are involved, but this book is so much more than that. Certainly one of my favourite reads so far this year!
Although I hardly ever reread a book, it's possible this one will make an exception. After that, I will see to it that this well-travelled book continues its journey.

The book turned up at the meeting in Groningen yesterday. I picked it up at the end of the meeting to be released during our visit at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam later this year.
