Got this in the post today. I really enjoyed "Can Any Mother Help Me?", and this book was recommended at the end of that book, so I am looking forward to reading it!

Journal Entry 6 by PenguinSilja from Rogers, Arkansas USA on Saturday, June 20, 2009
An interesting book, but not quite what I expected. I love the stories about the war, so much heart ache but also dark humour. I am not sure how much research the writers did, but it seems to be quite a lot, as I know from my own knowledge of history and reading non-fiction books that this is a very historically accurate book, which I appreciate (I have family in Switzerland, ancestors who fought in the British army and others who were in the camps). Personally, I was less interested in the post-war stories, the love interest and all that. It is something of a pet-peeve of mine, the constant need in movies ind literature to add a love interest in stories that do not need them. It is not that this part of the book was badly written, but I am not into romance and I felt it added nothing to the main story, ie what the title of the book indicated the book was about. This is why I give this book a 6, rather than the 8.5 it would get if it were only about the Literary Society.

Sending this off today or Monday to the next bookcrosser.

I was not aware that the book was written all in letters as though it was a series of correspondances between the main characters. At first I found it a little distracting, but I soon got into the swing of things. I really enjoyed the story, both the human interest parts and all the historical bits.

I will be mailing as soon as I have an address.

Mailed to Fancyhorse on 7/7/09.

A wonderful book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt so close to the characters that I want to meet them. It expresses a triumph of the human spirit over the adverse conditions of enemy occupation during wartime. Warmth and humor prevail. I hope there will be a sequel some day; I would like to know what happens to Kit as she grows older.

I found this in my mailbox last night all wrapped in bookcrossing glitter, not actually glitter--FancyHorse knows what I mean--but cheerful bookcrossing packaging to spur me along. I'm so happy to be part of JDT's wishlist bookring (what a great idea) and look forward to getting into this book very soon. Thanks to everyone who sent it in my direction.

A warm thanks to FancyHorse, sarradee, JDT and countedx58 for sharing this delightful book with me. I'd wanted to read it when I first glanced at it in the library and saw that the story begins with the spontaneous sharing of a book. It seemed the perfect bookcrossing book to me for that reason. I enjoyed it's light handed epistolary narrative of wartime and healing in Guernsey, which was occupied during much of World War II by the German Army. A dear friend of mine, a man who fought in Normandy, was wounded, and spent the rest of the war in a German prison camp, really enjoyed the book a few months ago and had recommended it to me so I was especially glad to have the chance to read it. May this book bring its next readers as much pleasure as it brought me.

c. 2008 -- 274 pages -- Trade Paperback -- Advanced Reading Copy -- 2 weeks on the USA Today top-10 Bestseller list:
#10 on 5/17/09 and 5/24

Back Cover: "I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers." January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for ner next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she'd never met, a native of Guernsey, the British island once occupied by the Nazis. He'd come across her name on the flyleaf of a secondhand volume by Charles Lamb. Perhaps she could tell him where he might find more books by this author. As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, she is drawn into the world of this man and his friends, all members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a unique book club formed in a unique, spur-of-the-moment way: as an alibi to protect its members from arrest by the Germans.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's charming, deeply human members, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Through their letters she learns about their island, their taste in books, and the powerful, transformative impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds there will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

Journal Entry 24 by ComradeCamper from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin USA on Saturday, November 28, 2009
The book arrived while I was away for Thanksgiving. When I got home and found Guernsey, I immediately put aside the fascinating book I was reading (Scott Turow's "One L", a memoir of his first year at Harvard Law School) and took up Guernsey. Sorry, Mr. Turow, will get back to you later!
I was glad I didn't waste a minute getting to Guernsey. I read through the first quarter of the book without being able to put it down. It's marvelously witty and bright!
Having just come back from a short trip in which I spent precious moments with family, and enjoyed abundant sumptuous food, it's all the more poignant to read about a time when people ate scraps, didn't have the freedom to travel, and were separated from family members, among many other hardships.
Now, reluctantly, I've stopped reading long enough to put away the Thanksgiving leftovers -- but I can't wait to get back to this story!

Thanks for starting this bookring, and thanks, Guinneth, for sending it on to me.

Mailed this marvelous book to oliviapoolside today. jeskawest had already read it, and thus asked that the ring skip her. So it's on its way to olivia, and then home to JDT.

This is the best book I've read all year -- or for that matter, the best book I've read in several years.
It riveted my attention!
The authors have a wonderful gift for capturing various voices, and can convey volumes to the reader very economically in a single line. For example, when Kit announces she "doesn't kiss", a great deal is revealed about Kit, Billie Bee, Juliet, and even Sophie.
Similarly, the authors manage to describe all the hardships and deprivation of the German Occupation of Guernsey just with brief mentions of lack of fuel, or by noting how the islanders hungered for old newspapers.

This particular copy of the book is an "Advanced Readers Copy". The back cover has the briefest of biographies about the authors. I understand that the aunt of the team died shortly before the book was finished. If that's true, it's really a tragedy, as that writing team will never produce a sequel. Not that it would be easy to follow up the GLPPPS.....

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to read this fabulous book, JDT!

Journal Entry 27 by BooksandMusic from Seattle, Washington USA on Tuesday, December 29, 2009
This is one of the best books that I have read this year. I laughed and cried my way through it. I wanted to move to Guernsey and live in this book.
I haven't yet tried to explain what it is about: Juliet is an author in England in 1946. She has written a successful and amusing column throughout the war to help people keep their spirits up. The book is a series of letters that Juliet and writes and receives, and some that are between other characters in the book. Juliet decides to write about a literary society she has heard about on Guernsey. She begins a correspondence with some of the members and finally goes to meet these people herself. These are the bones of the book. But the life is in the characters. I can't tell you why exactly, why this book, and not so many of the others that I have read. This book has captured my heart. I intend to buy it as a gift for several people as reading it is like drinking a tincture of the essence love.
