Review on Amazon.com:

This riveting tale of fear, suspicion, and love opens as the unnamed narrator reminisces about her former home, the grand English estate, Manderley. She had been young and shy, a lady's companion, when she met the wealthy recent widow, Maxim de Winter, fell in love with him, and married him in a matter of weeks. They returned to his home, where she was immediately overwhelmed with the responsibilities of running the house and dealing with her forbidding housekeeper as well as the memory of Maxim's first wife, Rebecca. She had been beautiful, sophisticated, and supremely confident, and the narrator felt lost and helpless in comparison. Her new husband was strangely distant to her, until a horrible secret was revealed that would change their lives and the very existence of Manderley.

Daphne Du Maurier has crafted a wonderfully spooky story with remarkably little action, but a great deal of atmosphere and a steadily mounting feeling of impending doom. The ravishing Rebecca is never seen, and yet she is the main character, dominating the story with her passions and cruelty. Another main "character" is the great house itself, which is described in such fascinating detail that I felt as if I had walked its long hallways, descended its grand stairs, and had tea in the library. The narrator is purposely kept anonymous to contrast her with the larger-than-life Rebecca, and Maxim is a seriously flawed but lovable man.

I love this book! I have probably read it 5 times in my life (for me that is saying something because I generally don't re-read books unless they are absolutely wonderful). Just the sheer creepiness of this book, it very carefully draws you in until you suddenly feel claustrophobic.

I am thinking of making it into a Bookring so others can discover it.

I must say that it took me some time to get into this book. I was exhausted from reading Ivanhoe (TINY print) and the main character really got on my nerves every time she hid from the servants. Then... there was a twist that kept me sucked into the story. The twists and turns kept coming... even though I think there was more to Ben than was exposed.

I'm very glad I got the chance to read this. Thank you, JennyC1230 for sharing this book. I truly enjoyed it! :-) I've PM'd the next person and will post once I receive the address.

Book arrived today! Thanks everyone for passing the book. I have a couple of books before this one. I'll try my best to finish it in time. I skimmed a bit, the text printing is small and the book looks dense!

Journal Entry 11 by meexia on Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Just to let everyone know that I need more time to finish the book, since life just got really busy the past few weeks. I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks plus to Indonesia and will bring the book with me. I should be able to finish it by the end of the trip.

I apologize for holding this book for a long time, but I've finally finished it and dropped it at the mailbox yesterday night. Thanks so much JennyC1230, for starting the ring. It was a slow read for me, but it could be because I read it in snippets and not in big chunks. I'm glad that I got a chance to read it though.

I was glad to get the opportunity to read this one. Thanks again for sending it out. I was more than a little frustrated with the new Mrs. de Winter - I just wanted her to act like she had a backbone and was gratified when she finally - finally - did. She had an active immigination with the detailed stories she would make up about different situations - she could just picture it, but I kept wanting to tell her to look at the facts and quit making things up. Anyway, interesting read and I would actually like to read the sequal and see what happened to her next.

Will be posting to DSP this week. (Maybe tomorrow - we have a typhoon in the area and I may not be getting out if the weather hasn't improved.)

29th JANUARY UPDATE: A quick note to let everyone know that I have just started reading this book today.

Journal Entry 19 by Tubereader from Lenningen / Lenneng, Kanton Remich Luxembourg on Monday, February 9, 2009
I finally finished the book. I think the writing was fantastic, but the story... well, it took me far too long to get suck into it. I felt that nothing was really happening until the last quarter of the book, and then everything picked up really fast. I think I could have survived with 150 pages of this book, the ones at the end... I was getting to a point where I was really annoyed with the main character. I am a shy person as well, but her behaviour was really too much. I felt like shaking her and telling her to start acting like an adult!

Anyway, I am really glad that the book became more enticing at the end, because that left me with a better feeling than the one I had yesterday at lunch time! (and also, if the book had stayed as it was, it would probably have taken me at least another week to finish it!).

I kind of understand why the book is considered a classic and, maybe, even why it is on the 1001 books list as it is extremely well written.

Thanks again to JennyC1230 for sharing. I have PMed ababaigalit for their address and will post the book as soon as I have it!

Well the book is safe and sound with me in Israel. I arrived yesterday from work and I found it waiting for me. It was a nice surprise after a long day of work. I will read it as soon as possible (it is exam time in the university in Israel) and continue it's journey in the bookring.

Well I am done with the re-read of this book. Yes I read it as a teenager and I loved it as I did the firs time. I have an uncle in Sacramento that says that it's good to read a book a couple of times in different parts of our life.
Rebecca", the book that gave Daphne du Maurier immortality, has all the features of the novel of its time. Balancing on the thin, invisible line between plain romance and deep psychological analysis, it is engrossing, for me to the point of sacrificing sleep.
Rebecca" is a great classic, full of suspence, with great characters. It is definitely worth reading even as the only book by du Maurier, to get acquainted with her style, and it is a very good novel for a long, winter evening, virtually moving the reader to the British countryside at the beginning of the twentieth century. Although the novel certainly aged, it did so gracefully, retaining all its charm.

Received in the mail today, I read this as a teenager and loved it, then lost my copy. Looking forward to reading this again, but noticed the small print and thickness...am a quarter done another huge book with small print (Russka), so it may take me a little while - since I'm last on the list I hope that works out okay!? Thanks for sharing, I wish I had seen most of the places this book has!!

Update Dec 2009: finished reading the book and planning to send it on its way for a Christmas RABCK so it can continue its travels. I loved the book again - something about the writing really drew me into the scenes and kept me there too late into the night! Then there is a twist, which took me by surprise - I can't believe how much I had forgotten since the original read almost 20 years ago, how could I have forgotten! It was interesting how the book started from the future, so you already knew a little about the outcome, then after the first little while you are fully transported back to Manderley, never leaving it again even in the concluding pages. Once I picked this up, I finished it quite quickly. Hope the next reader enjoys it too!
