Mirabelle took heavy student loans to pay for a degree in Art and now works in the glove department of Neiman Marcus in Los Angeles, where she has moved from Vermont for the sole purpose of being in Los Angeles. She takes up with a wealthy older man (Ray), and they both behave childishly for a while and then break up. Mirabelle is devastated for a short while, but then she meets up with Jeremy who she had a fling with before Ray. Jeremy has embarked on an extensive program of self-improvement, and has become a much more together person. Jeremy and Mirabelle resume their interrupted relationship. There is also a character called Lisa, who wants to sleep with Ray, but she doesn't have any effect on the other characters as far as I could tell.

The other members of the book club for which I read this thought that the characters' lack of emotional response to each other was a literary comment on the shallowness of Southern California, rather than just bad writing. But I'm not sure....

Thankfully this was a quick read. I have to agree with nillabreen on this book. It is very flat. The story could have been cute but instead it is more a stream of conscisiousness. It bounces from time to time with too much information in some and nearly none in others. There is a lot of time spent on nothing.

First of all, thanks to JPandJo for making this book available to us all. I would like to say good things about it, but I found it very difficult to get interested in this book and quit about one-third of the way through. Hopefully, the next person will love it. It was just not my cuppa!

This book was so-so...At first I didn't think I would like Mirabelle...My opinon of her changed once I read that she had two cats...and that one lived under the sofa...something about that made me like her...I was extremely happy to see her old love mature...I thought the move from L.A. to San Francisco was the best thing for her...I don't know if I'd recommend this book to others necessarily...but the book wasn't too bad...

This was a book that I really wanted to like. But as hard as I tried I just couldn't like it. I love Steve Martin's comedic style in movies, but his talent just didn't come across in the book for me. The book is terribly wordy, and I'm not one for extra nonsense words in novels. I read about 55 pages of the book and could not go any further because I was bored out of my mind!

I will be passing this on to the next in line for the bookray. Thanks for starting the ray!

Journal Entry 17 by lostbookisland on Tuesday, March 13, 2007

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
