A fantastic read, the ending included some unexpected revelations.
I felt like I'd read a 900 page novel at the end of this because there was so much detail and family history packed into the 350 pages.
I can't say that I liked any of the characters really - the women were all messed up and controlled (in different ways) by the men in their lives, and the men seemed to live for the farm with the women and family existing mildly somewhere in the distance. While this would normally put me off it spurned me to keep reading on to see what eventually happened.

This arrived today, I will start it this evening.
I am finding this difficult to start so will pass on to next reader, I have sent PM to them this evening.
I am finding this difficult to start so will pass on to next reader, I have sent PM to them this evening.
Arrived this morning. I have a few rings in front, mostly easy reads so this should be moving soon.
I have really struggled with this one, despite the fact that I had been really looking forward to reading and I like the concept of the book.
I have the address for the next reader, so off in the post just after the bank hols (no time to get to a post office before then).
Thanks for sharing.

i received this a few days ago, maybe even a week ago. I let the person who sent me know but for some reason overlooked documenting it here until now as i'm starting to read it today. It has some great reviews so i'm looking forward to what it has to offer.
It is so different to any book i have read before, this is part of the reason for participating in a book ray. The characters have many issues that seem to be avoidable, if they were avoided, perhaps the book wouldn't have been eventful. In my eyes, every character did wrong at some point, they shredded my view of country life of being a helpful community into being a more incestuous, backstabbing city style of living were details are scrutinized and misunderstood. The relationships between each of the characters is fickle and at the end of each 'book' there is a twist that arrives more suddenly than Christmas card in November. I have just finished the book, so it hasn't sunk in just yet. I'm unsure of whether i enjoyed it or not. If nothing else it reinforces the rule, 'trust no one'. What a way to live!

I've just started reading this - and I am loving it so far. I wondered how Jane Smiley was going to make the 'King Lear' story credible - but she's done a great job.
In the first 20 pages you have all the elements. A stubborn man, who knows exactly what he thinks is right, and who is used to making his own world around him (the land which Laurence Cook farms was created out of marshland - "However much these acres looked like a gift of nature, not of God, they were not. We went to church to pay our respects, not to give thanks"). A sense of the fragility of familial relations - stories of other families in which "generations of silence ... flow from a single choice", not to mention the precariousness of everything which looks most secure ("the grass is gone, now, and the marshes ... but the sea is still beneath our feet, and we walk on it"). And finally, a stubborn comment from the youngest child, who refuses to indulge her father and "had simply spoken as a woman rather than as a daughter. That was something, I realised in a flash, that Rose and I were pretty careful never to do".
I'm so looking forward to the rest of the book. At the moment I have a sort of doomy feeling of tragedy ahead.

It's arrived! Hopefully I should get around to reading it in a day or so. Thank you katrinat for including me and Wanderingstar8 for sending it to me. The postcard will come in handy as a bookmark and it will then travel on with the book.
Note: Who wrote 'u smell' in tiny letters on the back of the postcard? Come on now, own up!

I'm sorry I've held on to this book for so long but I just couldn't get into it. I really did try which is why it's been with me for this time but there is so much going on in my life at the moment and I just couldn't cope with so many different characters. I am PMing daisyflower123 for her address.
Thank you katrinat and sorry I couldn't finish it. :0(

Just received in the post, and put at top of TBR pile! :-)
I can't really make my mind up whether I liked this book or not!
I found it quite slow going, although I still felt compelled to read on.
I think it was because I found the main characters quite annoying, weak women, although I did understand their positions within their environment, and also the era in which the story was set.
Sorry I've had it a little longer than planned, and thanks for sharing!
Just posted off to lauraloo29.

Arrived safe and sound today. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with bookrings, but I'll manage them. Thank you!
I'm not enjoying this book. I might normally have pressed on, but I have too many other rings here staring at me. Thank you for sharing!
I have tried to contact Supertalya. I'll try again and hopefully this will be on its way this week.

I am the end of the bookray. I was hoping to send it out again, but there doesn't appear to be any interest.
So I am sending this as a RABCK to ReetPetite. Enjoy!

Thanks for this RABCK lauraloo29
Really loved this book. I'd love to just walk out on everything like Ginny did.
Her husband was awful just to stand there while his wife was insulted.
It's a shame that incest was introduced in a way, it would have been good enough that the father was an awkward character, although I suppose it gave the sisters a secret so that they felt justified.
