Darkly impressive The Times

Book Description:
In the relentless summer heat, four abruptly orphaned children retreat into a shadowy, isolated world, and find their own strange and unsettling ways of fending for themselves ...

An extremely assured, technically adept and compelling piece of work Observer

5 out of 10

This has been on my shelf for 18 months.
It's time to read it - and the motivation for that is that I want to send it over to the USA (with a ray) as a surprise RABCK

ETA
Ian McEwan is a good writer - but I'm not sure about his choice of subjects especially in this book. The themes in this short book were very weird - as were the characters - and I never really got to understand their motivation. The setting of the book too remained somewhat vague.

Overall disappointing. I expected more.

Thanks for the surprise RABCK! However, I have another copy of this that I "checked out" from the 1001-library. I haven't read it yet but hope to soon. I also currently have a 1001 bookbox in my possession so since I have another copy of this, I will include this copy in the bookbox so it can continue its travels.

7 out of 10

This was a disturbing yet engrossing book. Four siblings end up as orphans living alone in there home. They are each dealing with the separate deaths of their parents (mainly mom) in very different ways. Only when an outsider steps in are their dirty little secrets exposed.
