Book Description

With effortless grace, celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra's impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960s. We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a thirteen-year-old houseboy who works for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who has abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene. Half of a Yellow Sun is a tremendously evocative novel of the promise, hope, and disappointment of the Biafran war.

As I received two copies of this, I'm sending this one on to morsecode who chose it out of the 5th round of the Passport to the World VBB at bookobsessed.com

Enjoy!

ETA December 26, 2008: I did read my other copy of this book and loved it. This was an incredible book. Adichie is a gifted writer and I look forward to reading more of her books.

Half of a Yellow Sun told the heartwrenching story of a country in a civil war. Absolutely beautifully written with detailed character portrayals. I felt as though I know the characters and that they live on.

I'm putting together a bag of books to loan my mom (chargoyle), who is up visiting this weekend. I think she might like this one. It'll go back to Mt. TBR once she's done with it.

10 out of 10

I could not put down this engaging novel! It's a "must read" in my estimation. The history of Biafra now makes sense to me. Thank you, morsecode, for including it with the other books. I hope you like it as much as I did.
