I've never read this series before, and appreciate the opportunity to share them with Mom. Thank you!

I tried this one last night and just didn't like the main character. I really didn't care for the skeevy way the Police Chief was hitting on her, and didn't much care who murdered Del, or why.

Thanks to CatsBooksEtc for the RABCK. I'll pass on to princess-peapod after I read it!
I really enjoyed this one, but realize it might not appeal to everyone. I would call it a cozy-noir.
I'm sending this on to princess-peapod today. I hope she likes it as much as I did.

I like the term cozy noir that the previous journaller said, that fits for this book. It is set in a small town in the south where there is still quite a bit of racial & social hierachy. The way to story unfolded was interesting to me, though clues gave some things away I was suprised at a couple of things which made me want to read the rest of the series. Thanks again for the lovely rabck of these books!

Picked up from a bookcrossing meeting in Avila Beach, Ca tonight.
Our prickly hero, Ms. Bard, living in Shakespeare, Arkansas, finds another body. This time in the gym where she works out way too much. Soon we learn that this is in fact the third death in recent weeks that is suspicious.
At the same time there are disturbing incidents that indicate that bigotry against blacks is alive and well in town, and it appears that the deaths of these three people might be connected to that prejudice.
On the personal side we learn that Lily is not as much involved with Marshall, her martial arts instructor, as she was in the last episode, and she is more involved with the police chief, although something in her has not let this relationship go all the way. She wants the chief as a good friend and is afraid that sex will alter that friendship irretrievably.
As with the first Lily Bard mystery, there is no methodical investigation. Instead Lily keeps getting connected to events and having to fight her way out - literally. Through these scrapes she meets somebody new - will he be longer-lasting? Through these altercations the killers are also revealed, eventually.
I like Lily's edginess, and it's consistent with that of a rape victim, I suspect. She has a tendency to knock someone's eye out before she will make polite noises, but there are many instances when she softens. I SO appreciate not having to read endless paragraphs about the pecs of men as the source of lust. Lily has enough strength of her own not to be taken in by pure muscle.
