Got this in the mail today. Thanks for setting up this bookring! TBR.

I couldn't quite let this ring pass me. After watching The Big Lebowski for the first time, White Russian is one of the favourite drinks among my friends.

I've read about a third of the book, and first I'd like to apologise for the state it is in already - me being its first reader! I accidentally spilt some water on the table and didn't realise that the book soaked up some of it till later. I dried the book, but now the pages are a bit wavy at the bottom and I had to repair the cover sheet, too.

As regards the story:
It's 1917, Tsarist Russia during the First World War. The chief investigator of the Petrograd police has to deal with a brutal killer, with a slow bureaucratic system, with the omnipresent Okhrana Secret Police force, with revolutionaries and with the conservative aristocratics - and yet the story is getting on slowly, too slowly actually. The "rich atmosphere" that is praised on the back cover does not grip me (or rather, I don't find a "rich atmosphere"...).

Anyway, I'll get back once I'm through and will then send the book on to Canada.

7 out of 10

Well, the book gets better after about the middle, but nonetheless is not very convincing to me. An unexpected twist occurs in the last few chapters, and the story gets more or less fast-paced towards the end, which would make it a good TV film, but that's about it. The first half is rather boring, and so my rating cannot exceed 7/10.

5 out of 10

Sorry it took so long to read and journal this book ... there's really no excuse :(

I can't say I really enjoyed this book. I loved the main character, his tenacity, and his love for his son, but I really couldn't see what he found so attractive about this ballerina. I found that the plotting in this book was uneven. The plot changed drastically about 3/4 of the way thru, and the pace increased from turtle slow to breakneck speed, and I felt it lost a great deal of credibility (believability?) at that point. And the ending just left me more confused than ever.

Also, I found the names and titles/jobs of the characters rather confusing, so I made up a character list. I'll keep it with the book. Hopefully, it will be of use to the next reader.

I'll email the next person on the bookring list, and get her address to send it on.

I guess this is another of my rings to get lost in the mail. I am up to about 10 of them now :-(
