Brilliant book. I found in this book a maturing of the writing style which was very intense in this novel and became somewhat darker than the previous books I had already read by Michael Connelly. I liked the way the focus shifted between the black disturbances of the original perpetrator and the team hunting him down. This was an intense, stark, tightly controlled tale with some unusual and surprising twists. I liked the way in which the ending became 'happenchance' but had personal consequences beyond the story (do I feel a sequel for these characters? ~ oh yes, just read there is a sequel). For once, I totally agree with one of the credits which reads “Most impressive …rich in detail, strong on character, with a fascinating plot that functions on several emotional levels … Connelly has, with great skill, given us a detective who inhabits a world filled only with torment, fear and danger”. Think I may release this one in Wells whilst searching for my next NSS partners wish-list selection.
