At work we get book vouchers for birthdays... well, and I started to ask in the German forum for recommendations two years ago and have always got very interesting ones. So this years "winner" is cassiopeia22 with that one. She´ll get the book as soon as I´ve read it and may keep it or release it or whatever (as this is bookcrossing).

April 6th, 2008: Just started the book (after giving up on Life of Pi, which I found horribly hmm religous, haha) and well, I really like it! Seems to be a book I would never have read without BookCrossing and quite a read! Thanks for recommending it!

April 13th, 2008: The book just came back with me to Darmstadt from a weekend in Amsterdam. So it has already travelled a bit! It´s quite a nice read - of course you somehow feel the author being very young - but who says we should only read books by old people (hehe). The story´s about a girl with a Nigerian mother and an English father, haunted by... hm.. don´t want to tell you too much.

The book is now leaving Darmstadt again and going to Cassiopeia22. Have fun!

A wonderfull, great book! The story really took me in. All the time reading I was wondering what was going on and even now that I have finished it I´m not sure, but I figured a solution out for myself which may be what the author wanted to say.
I can´t agree that you could feel that the author is very young, when you don´t know that. But I somehow felt that because the author was 18 or something when she wrote the book, she was more able to describe how a child thinks or feels than a person who is, no offence, about 50 years old or so. You often read of child characters who have a very simple way of thinking which is absolutely not the case with Jess.
I truly loved this book and I think it is great literature. I don´t know what I´m going to do with it next. For the first time I´m going to keep, but maybe I´ll start a ray or something sometime.
Thanks sister for giving this great book to me!

Brought this book to the post office today, it is now on it´s way to msjoanna. Hehe, I love to confuse the employees in our small post office with my book shippings and other non regular requests. This time they didn´t want to believe me that there is an international book shipping and after reading their catalogues for 5 minutes they had to admit that I was right... :-)
Happy reading!

The book has arrived in New York City. I'll be starting it this week. Thanks for sharing.

Update 11/26: I'm about halfway through this book...so I'm going to go ahead and finish it even though I'll be keeping it slightly longer than a month. I'm enjoying it, but have been really busy and haven't had as much reading time as usual.

What a strange and wonderful book! The writing could have been tightened up quite a bit, but the story was compelling and the author managed to capture the inner thoughts of a child who is sometimes terrified and confused by the world. I wish we'd had a bit more insight into the father's thoughts and life, and that the family members in Nigeria had become more fully realized characters. Still, I very much enjoyed the plot and was completely sucked into the ending wanting to find out what would happen.

I've sent a few PMs to Antimony with no response, so I've moved on to sending a PM to Chantie. Sorry to keep this longer than a month, but thanks for bringing this one to my attention. I'd never heard of this book before it was offered for this ring.

Finished this yesterday. Heartgirl tried to read it first, couldn't get in to it. Although the theme of alienation comes through I frankly got bored with the plot line as it wasn't driven to any conclusion but meandered to nowhere. What make me join the ring firstly was the title "The Icarus Girl" as I've always between intrigued by the myth of Icarus flying to close to the sun. Herein lies the rub, or I missed the plot completely! Nowhere in the novel could I find any reference to Icarus in the experiences of Jessamy Harrison the central character.

Thanks for sharing. I am last on the list and will PM Cassiopeia22 to find out whether she would like to have it returned or the ring to continue.
