"India, the great mirage-haunted plains of East Bengal, a strange India of vast barren expanses, of sprawling rivers, of small shaggy towns. In one such town, Amorra, the Government Farm is run by an Englishman with a violent and shadowy past, a lovely wife - whom he hates - and two small daughters. Amorra is a town bewitched: strange whispers hover in the moonlight; superstition, race hatred, terror combine and grow towards explosion.."

Quite interesting book, written in1942. The mixture of traditional and modern India, secrets, strong feelings, innocence and passion. Worth of reading, I think.
