Bought 26 Jan 2008 - Bookends

Rachel, a successful 30-something production assistant living in LA, looks back on her time in an ashram in India, worshipping an incarnation of God who died before she got there, living among a group of damaged and frankly odd people, trying to fit in at a school where the teachers beat her and the kids threw stones at her...

Not so much a misery memoir as a clear-sighted look back at the madness of it all. She comes to terms with her mother's actions, shows what she has learnt, and credits certain people with encouraging her writing career.

Engaging and different.

I won't be re-reading, but will register and offer on a BookRay.

I thought this was an entertaining read. Mani turned Rachel's story about her young life in an ashram in India. Surrounded by crazy people she lived a difficult life being the only child on the ashram. I found parts of it very funny, others sad and even moving. I'm glad she survived with her mind intact to tell the story. Quick to read, it made a refreshing change to read a story about real people that held my interest, amused me and didn't get boring.

Thanks for sharing, I'll pass it on to calalilly asap.

Sorry for keeping this so long. A very different book to what I normally read, I did find it amusing in places. Sending this off to CaterinaAnna in the next few days.

Arrived safely and going straight to the top of Mount Toobie: thank you calalilly.

Journal Entry 9 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Sunday, October 19, 2008
I've been very busy and very naughty reacently: it hasn't really taken me three weeks to read this!

I found Rachel's story entertaining and horrifying all at the same time. Why do other peoples' beliefs often seem so wierd and our own so rational? I'm glad she survived the experience and has come out of it unscathed enough to tell even some of the more grisly bits of the tale (the above mentioned stone-throwing, for example, which seems to have hung around far longer than one might expect) with humour.

Thank you for sharing LyzzyBee. I have Cross-Patch's address somewhere, so will get this parcelled up as soon as I've caught up on JEs and so on.

What a surprise! Our new postman is getting to be very good. This morning he came up to me as I was getting in the car and said 'I've got a book for you, do you want it?' So, off it came shopping with me.

Thank you CaterinaAnna and LyzzyBee. Only one book before it - I've caught up.

I really don't know what to think of this book. Parts had me laughing out loud, but other parts I struggled with and had to put it down several times, sometimes for days on end because I just could not get into it.

I pm'd pammykn and they asked to be skipped. Am now pm'ing Pell and will journal again once it has been sent.

Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you Io-reader book arrived safely today with 2 others so will try to read asap, looking forward to this one. Also, thank you LyzzyBee for starting this ring

Journal Entry 18 by Pell from Canino, Lazio Italy on Tuesday, February 24, 2009
I thought this book was well written and a good idea for a book, I enjoyed the beginning but wanted to hurry up and finish it, not because I was enjoying the story, but found it slow, irritating and not as exciting as it could have been. Have posted it to Penelopewanders today hope she enjoy it better than I did.

It has arrived safely in the snowy Alps, and is joining several other rings which have all arrived in the past week or so! Unless I'm mistaken, it looks like I'm at the end of the ring, so I'm hoping it's ok if maybe I save this for our Easter break??? Things are pretty busy until then here. Last term I gave a course with India as the theme, so I am really looking forward to this. Thanks so much for making it available, and please let me know if there's any urgency to this.

Journal Entry 20 by wingpenelopewanderswing from Saint-Loup-des Vignes, Centre France on Friday, April 17, 2009
A ray which ended with me. I enjoyed this autobiography very much... several laugh out loud moments, and at the same time I was relieved that Rachel came out of it all as well as she ostensibly did. Having spent part of my childhood in that part of the world (but NOT in an ashram), many parts brought back memories. Saddened and surprised at how aggressive the local children were. Baba! What a childhood! but a very good storyteller too.

I may lend this to a few people around here before offering it to continue its journey as a ray. Thanks for making it available.

I'm thankful for Rachel's self-absorbed parents and crazy childhood so that we can read about it. I enjoyed her humor and clear insights into some very strange people and situations. Sorry I kept this so long.

Like a boomerang this one came back to me several times! Now it has been selected from the international VBB and is headed to Dubai. I've covered my tracks by sending it not from Switzerland but from France where there is (still) a very advantageous book rate... so maybe this time it will not come back to me! I found this a very interesting read- hope you enjoy it!

Journal Entry 27 by DubaiReader at Dubai, Dubai United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, August 5, 2015
Thanks for sending me this VBB book, it was here when I returned from nearly a month away, so I may be a bit delayed in journalling.
Looking forward to reading this :)
