Journal Entry 1 by LeishaCamden from Alna bydel, Oslo fylke Norway on Thursday, March 27, 2008
From the front cover: 'A European superstar, in English for the first time! 'A great read' Waterstones.com' From the back cover: 'Geralt was always going to stand out, with his white hair and piercing eyes, his cynicism and lack of respect for authority ... but he is far more than just a striking-looking man. He's a witcher; his sorcerous powers, enhanced by elixirs and long training, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless assassin. Yet he is no ordinary murderer; his targets are the vile fiends that ravage the land. But first appearances are often deceptive. Not everything monstrous-looking is evil, and not everything fair is good ... and in every fairy tale, there is a grain of truth. As guardian of the innocent, Geralt, the witcher from Rivia, meets incestuous kings with undead daughters, vengeful djinns, shrieking harpies, lovelorn vampires and despondent ghouls: many are pernicious, some are wicked, and none are quite as they appear ... 'Like a complicated magic spell, a Sapkowski novel is a hodgepodge of Fantasy, intellectuall discourse, dry homour and economics' TIME 'Beautifully written ... a refreshing champion in a genre that's getting a little homogenic' SPECUSPHERE www.sapkowski.pl' This is a trade paperback copy from Gollancz, published in 2007. The book was originally published in Polish in 1993. I don't know anything about this book, I've never heard of it, or of the author. I got this book as a present from a friend, a very belated birthday (October 14th) or Christmas present. (I got two books and he told me to choose for myself which was which. :-) The package with the books and a letter arrived in the mail from England today. I'm fascinated! Polish fantasy - I've never read anything like this before! :-) I couldn't agree more that the fantasy genre is getting to be rather 'same, same' ... I read less and less fantasy these days, unfortunately ... and this will definitely be a new experience for me. A huge thank you to my friend!! :-)

It doesn't look as if this author has been a big hit with his UK ... debut? - mine is the only book in English by him that has been registered here. :-)

Hm. I'm much more of a science fiction reader than a fantasy reader, but a Polish fantasy bestseller certainly seems intriguing. Hope it is different than the majority of epic fantasy published nowadays.
