Journal Entry 2 by Catwoman from Sherwood Park, Alberta Canada on Thursday, January 08, 2009
Listened to this a while ago. I was amazed at what we really don't know about Shakespeare and how much has become part of the legend and has basically become fact. Bill Bryson is a pleasure to listen to (as always).

I was expecting it to be funnier in the usual Bill Bryson. This is more straight forward. It is interesting. I especially liked the way he treats the issue of is Shakespeare really Shakespeare.

Thanks for sending this my way, tranq1. Bryson is always a treat, and since I haven't listened to one of his books, I look forward to the opportunity. Thank you!
UPDATE: Oops...I thought I journaled this again before sending it off to rannie, but I guess not. Anyway, I really enjoyed this audio. It is a bit dry at times, but I found it quite interesting to hear about all the things going on during Shakespeare's time. It's great to put him into proper historical perspective. I also loved the bits about the Swan and the Globe, and I especially enjoyed hearing about his children. Bryson is a master researcher, and this book fits the bill. Oh, I thought it really funny that Bryson mentioned that some top complaints of the times were that London was too crowded and noisy and that those darned kids never want to walk anywhere. LOL Some things never change, eh?

This brief entertaining biography of William Shakespeare and his times is perfect for someone who wants to know a bit more about the bard than they learned in Lit class.
