For the past two days I've been trying to think of a more disturbing book I've read than The Wasp Factory and I can't. A C lockwork Orange is tame compared to this. But it's good!
The constant litany of violent thoughts put me on edge and I was starting to wonder where on Earth this was going, but the final twist was brilliant and added an thought-provoking finale to what was in danger of being a revolting novel.

Trying hard not to pick up anything at the monthly meetup because I have too many books but this was going to be left. Never got around to reading any Iain Banks yet.

Talk about a dysfunctional family … and throw in a dwarf for good measure! There is obviously some kind of madness in the genes and it’s affecting more than just Eric. Frank’s matter-of-fact descriptions of animal cruelty made me think that this is often the first manifestation of serious emotional turmoil that escalates into mass killings. But then he tells us simply he’s already killed three people. Some of the episodes are quite disturbing and almost unbearable. I did actually feel a bit horrified at some of the scenes after Eric’s escape although their phone calls were sometimes funny. Though you'll be disturbed and perhaps even disgusted, you'll want to find out what exactly the Wasp Factory is, you'll want to see what is in Frank's father's study, and you'll want to see how it ends. Iain Banks gradually releases each piece of information and keeps you waiting for the next.

Caught at the Belfast BC meetup April 2017, looks good! Can't believe I still haven't read this! Though on second thoughts, could be my subconscious fear of wasps.... well, I'll still give it a try!
