Journal Entry 1 by lynlee4 from North Port, Florida USA on Tuesday, March 18, 2008
From Bookmarks Magazine In The Last Days of Dogtown, Diamant paints a vivid and gripping historical setting as she delves into a lost crevice of human drama in 19th-century Massachusetts and renders it with a modern slickness. There are no novel revelations about love, however. Instead, she takes us alongside the drunkards, whores, and witches (the strongest character is Black Ruth, who rarely speaks), and, in the end, she evokes the tragic silliness of humanity in the grays and pale sunshine of Cape Ann.

Journal Entry 2 by lynlee4 from North Port, Florida USA on Saturday, March 22, 2008
This was a good story, an enjoyable read. Nothing fantastic but good enough for me to want to keep with it. I like her characters - she has a way of helping you connect with them-and she has a great way of developing them as you read further on...even the jerks. I felt a little cheated in the end...I wanted to know more.

Journal Entry 4 by ladybug74 from Dothan, Alabama USA on Wednesday, August 06, 2008
Received in today's mail. Thank you! I didn't even realize when I requested this one that it was by the same author as The Red Tent. I just finished that one this morning and it was great, so I look forward to reading this one!

Journal Entry 5 by ladybug74 from Dothan, Alabama USA on Tuesday, August 12, 2008
I really enjoyed this book once I got into it. The beginning started out a little slow and I wasn't sure if I would continue reading it, but after the first couple of chapters I was hooked. I enjoyed this book and enjoyed The Red Tent even more than this one, so I will be looking forward to more books by this author.

Journal Entry 7 by jenptcfan from Conway, Arkansas USA on Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Plucked from the I See a Tree box. My newly-formed book group chose The Red Tent (also by this author) as our first book. While it wasn't my favorite book ever, I liked it enough to consider giving the author another try. Several of the ladies really loved that book, so I'll probably offer this book for them to read and try to get them as hooked on bookcrossing as I am.
