A beautiful, gentle, subtle piece of art that will stay with me forever. I am talking about Susan Vreeland's lovely novel, but that description could just as easily apply to the painting that is the novel's focus.

Vreeland gives her readers a history of a fictional Vermeer painting of a young girl dressed in a blue smock. The painting has lived in many homes over its life. Readers are taken through the painting's journey in reverse chronological order. We see how different people respond to the painting's beauty. Each chapter tells a story about people who owned the painting, with the final chapters being told by the painter and the model.

The book is about relationships and communication. About people who love art because it makes them feel, and about people who love art because it makes them rich.

In the same way that a good author can paint pictures with their words, Vreeland teaches us that a good painter can tell stories with their brush.

I will definately seek out other works by this author.
