This is a memoir written by a housecleaner, but not just any housecleaner--this one is a a snarky, brutally honest and funny housecleaner that isn't afraid to share tell it like it is. I found her writing to be engaging and funny as she shares the underworld of toilet scrubbing. I am not blessed with a housekeeper, but after reading her memoir, I am not sure I would want someone around to pick up dirt on me.

I would describe this as a mix of a biography, career and travel memoir (she travels to Japan, New York, and infiltrates a cleaning service to learn more on the trade)with a hint of those "unauthorized biographies"--just this time of the those that scrub for the rich and not-so-famous.

This book is going out on a bookring to travel a bit before I hope to rehome it in a future bookbox I am planning.

The bookring rules are as follows:

When it gets to you journal that it has arrived safely and pm the next person for their address.

When you finish, please journal what you thought of the book. Try to keep it moving, it's a fast read and really should move within a couple of weeks, but please don't keep it more than a month. If things get crazy and you need more time it's your responsibility to keep me updated.

Media mail is fine for shipping.

Thanks!

This was a interesting book. It didn't go quite as in-depth as I had expected, but it wasn't boring. I was pleased to see how the author went through the various thought processes about her job. I will send this along as soon as I get the address for the next participant. Thank you for allowing me to be part of the ring!

I just loved this book! It was such an entertaining read. I really enjoyed the author's self-awareness and lack of self-absorption. She shares enormous truths about how we human beings carry on in this world; how we see ourselves and how we treat each other. I laughed aloud in some places and was close to tears in others. Thanks heaps, Bluestocking88, for sharing this gem.

Off in the post today to JenKazoo, who lives very near my 4th+5th-grade hometown!

This came in the mail yesterday. I already have started reading it and so far it looks like it will be a comical read. I would usually finish it in a few days but this is my least week of class before finals so I may have to put it aside for a couple days so I can study and write my final papers.

Journal Entry 10 by JenKazoo from Shreveport, Louisiana USA on Thursday, May 15, 2008
I finished the book last week but haven't been able to send it out yet. Things have been hectic around here. I've PMed 300dogs for her address so it will be moving soon, hopefully in a few days.

I really thought this book was funny. The picture of Louise Rafkin on the back of the book looks like the lady that played Roseanne's sister, Laurie Metcalf. I would have liked to read some more "dirt" on the people she cleaned for though. That would have been fun!

Oh, I just love finding books mixed in along with the bills in the mailbox!!! Yippee!! This one looks fun.

Here's my thought about this book...the photo on the back cover...is that a man in drag???

It's here, safe and sound!

I'm in the middle of two others, and one is slow going, but I don't think it will take long to read once I get going.

Thanks for sharing it with me!

This was a quick read, and a lot of fun. It certainly made me cast a guilty eye around my messy house... ah, well.

Overally, I thought the book was interesting, and I really liked the author's point of view. I did think she was a little snider than she needed to be with some of the things she disagreed with - like the messies at the meeting she attended. But that's just one of my quirks, I guess, and she did find a way that it applied to her in the end, so maybe that's where she was going with that chapter all along. I found her experience with "Happy Maids" disgraceful, and it fit with other descriptions I've heard of those kind of cleaning businesses.

All in all, a quick, enjoyable, lightweight read. I'll PM flossie771 for an address and get this in the mail this week.

Not the best memoir I've read, but interesting nonetheless. I can't say that I can relate to her at all - I HATE cleaning! It was surprising to me to find that some people actually enjoy it.
