"In this sequel to The Lost Sahara Trail, Captain Gevert searches for the buried City of Ghana in the heart of the desert. An archaeologist, an air pilot, a girl reporter, and a crook, are all equally interested in the search - and the city's famed gold."

Hmm... I picked this up as it's clearly about the Sahara, about which I've read quite a bit recently. At first glance this doesn't seem to be of quite the same caliber, but you never know... It was sitting on the shelf in the Camel and Artichoke, Waterloo.

22/10 I picked this up after reading "Un désir d'Orient" about Isabelle Eberhardt, in which all paths were leading to the desert, without actually getting there (it was just the first part of a biography). So I chose this book to take me there... To my surprise I really enjoyed it, despite it being aimed at teenagers. Very much the kind of book that was to be found amongst my grandparents' shelves, and with chapters such as "Anouk's Great Chance", "Captain Gevert's New Expedition" and "Saved!", I found all the detail lent to the descriptions of the desert, its peoples and conditions, to be very real indeed and sent me right back to my own short taste (rich in sweet, bitter green tea!) of desert life. The only information I can find on Herbert Kaufmann (thanks to a recent new edition of another title - proving his books to be timeless in a way - this one was published in 1957, three years before the city in question was more thoroughly excavated than it had been in 1914 when first discovered) is that he was a journalist in Africa in the 50s and 60s. I'm sure he based much on personal experience. Kumbi Salah and Gurong are the places being discovered as part of the realm of the ancient and gold-rich Ghana, in today's southern Mauritania.
