Lush romance set in Kyrgyzstan during the war, written by a noted Kyrgyz author who is also an ambassador for his country. Don't read the back cover - it gives away the entire plot. At only 96 pages, it's a quick read.

Counts as Kyrgyzstan for the Olympic Challenge.

Oh no! I read the back cover! LOL! Sorry, blackwidow, I forgot ... !! ;-)

This arrived in the mail from England today, along with two other books for my 'a book from every country' challenge. Thank you so much, blackwidow!! This is very much appreciated. It will take me a little while to get these books read but I will definitely read them, and journal my thoughts on them. :-)

I've read this book now, started on Friday and finished it yesterday. It was a very quick and easy read, but with great depth to the story.

This is a story that takes place during WWII, so that in the village where it is set, there are few men left, and women and young boys are having to perform a lot of tasks and chores that are normally men's work. The narrator belongs in the former group, and he has been assigned the work of transporting grain from the fields to the area's storage facility - a very important task for the war effort - which he performs alongside Jamilia, his brother's wife. The young couple have not been married for very long, don't know each other well, and when the soldier writes home, the main focus of his letter is his mother and other family members.

Another young soldier arrives home from the war with a wounded leg, but still able to work. He is assigned to assist Jamilia and her brother-in-law in their task. Having lived in their village as a child, he is quite unusual, and soon attracts attention from more than one quarter.

This was a lovely story, beautifully written and well translated. Very poetic. The story is both sad and uplifting. The setting is quite exotic to me but the story transcends its setting, no question. I liked this book a lot, thank you for sharing, blackwidow. :-)

This book will count for Kyrgyzystan in my A Book From Every Country challenge.

I now have some plans for this book, let's see what happens ... :-)

Got this from Leisha at last month's meetup. Looking forward to reading it! (Apologies for taking so long to journal it; I've been far too busy with Christmas and moving house.)
