Synopsis from amazon.co.uk: "This is the first of three books that tell the courageous story of Anna, who was just a little girl when Hitler came to power. In this story, Anna and her brother are rushed out of Germany in secrecy, away from everything they know. Their father is wanted by the Nazis - dead or alive."

I never read this as a child so I've been meaning to get hold of a copy for while now. I'm really looking forward to reading this!

Passed on to me by snufkin81 from her TBR pile.

This book is an easy entry into life just before and during the time of the second World War. The narrator is Anna, a member of a family forced to flee Germany because of Hitler's oppressive policies. The book will provide the young reader with a good insight into the difficulties of life as a political refugee settling in a new country.

I enjoyed this story, possibly even more due to the knowledge that it is based on the author's own experiences as a child. I was surprised that there was actually little about the Holocaust itself as I had thought that this was the main focus of the book. But it was very interesting to read about Anna's transition, first to Switzerland and then to Paris, her battle to learn French and her occasional struggles with feelings of alienation and "not belonging", even though in the end she always stayed optimistic. I'd like to read further about how her family settled into life in England and how they coped when World War 2 began.
